Cycling Without Age dreams of creating a world together, in which access to active citizenship creates happiness among our fellow elderly citizens.
Objectives
- To provide our Napier elderly with an opportunity to remain an active part of their local community, to be able to feel the wind in their hair, experiencing their community up close from the Triobike and giving them the chance to tell their stories and relive their memories.
- To build connections between generations, reinforcing trust, respect and the social glue in our Napier Community.
- To Build Better Lives.
About CWA Napier
We offer free rides on electric assist trishaws, ridden by our trained volunteer pilots, to those who cannot get outside easily, reconnecting them with their community.
CWA Napier has three trishaws, two electric Triobikes, Maggie and Nola, and a wheelchair-carrying electric tricycle named Joy.
We enhance our community: We strengthen our community links by creating volunteer opportunities, forming new connections and fostering respect for others.
We enrich and build better lives: By delivering beneficial opportunities to relive memories, through storytelling of these reminiscences and by generating new friendships.
Without age: We make it possible, regardless of age or ability for passengers to enjoy a ride in their community and feel the “Wind in their hair” again.
Contact us to arrange one-on-one rides, or organise care/rest home dedicated times or reserve times for Agency activities/events.
History
Cycling Without Age (CWA), began in 2012 by Ole Kassow in Copenhagen, Denmark. Ole wanted to help elders get back on their bicycles but had to find an answer to their limited mobility. His solution was a trishaw in which he offered rides to his local nursing home residents.
CWA is now an international program in 30+ countries. Our Napier Chapter was created in 2022 by Alan White and Liz Barrett and we are excited to be a part of this global community.
Alan, on his return home following his solo cycle tour of USA Route 66, wanted to ‘give back’ to his community. He felt, like Ole, that a local chapter would be a great way for the elderly community to feel the wind in their hair again and enjoy his love of cycling. Alan is our Captain and Pilot Trainer.
Liz has been a volunteer in several places around the world and joined Alan in forming the Trust. Liz provides the accounting, administration, recruiting and fundraising needs of the Trust, using her expertise gained from her previous international career. Liz is your contact for bookings and donations.
